UPAN Community Charter
Building a Global African Family
UPAN is more than a learning platform or professional network.
It is a community of Africans and the global African diaspora who believe that by learning together, working together and building together, we can create greater opportunities for ourselves and for future generations.
This Charter sets out the values that shape how we think, act and engage with one another.
These are not rules imposed from above. They are principles we choose to live by.
Our Ten Principles
1. Build from Strength
We acknowledge the past, but we focus our energy on building the future.
2. Coordinate, Don't Just Communicate
Discussion is valuable, but action creates change.
3. Build Capability First
We strengthen ourselves, our communities and our institutions before expecting others to solve our problems.
4. Create Ownership
We aim to build, own and shape opportunities, not simply participate in those created by others.
5. Share Success
Knowledge, experience and opportunity become more valuable when they are shared.
6. Unity Through Diversity
We celebrate our different cultures, countries and experiences while working towards common goals.
7. Africa and the Diaspora Are One Family
We believe the continent and its global diaspora are stronger together than apart.
8. Focus on Solutions
We recognise problems honestly, then direct our energy towards building practical solutions.
9. Knowledge Is Meant to Be Shared
Learning should circulate freely so that everyone can grow faster together.
10. Build Something Bigger Than Yourself
Every skill learned, every connection made and every project completed helps strengthen the future of our global African community.
What We Mean
1. Build from Strength
We understand the historical challenges that have shaped Africa and its diaspora. But awareness alone is not enough. We choose to invest our energy in building skills, businesses, networks and institutions that strengthen our communities today.
2. Coordinate, Don't Just Communicate
Sharing ideas is only the beginning. Every conversation should move us closer to collaboration, practical action or helping someone else move forward.
3. Build Capability First
Lasting influence comes from capability. We focus on developing our knowledge, our businesses, our professional networks and our collective capacity so that we can shape our own future with confidence.
4. Create Ownership
We believe lasting progress comes from creating things we build, own and improve ourselves. Whether it is a business, a project, a community initiative or an institution, ownership creates independence and long-term value.
5. Share Success
Individual success matters, but shared success strengthens everyone. We encourage members to mentor, teach, share opportunities and help others progress alongside them.
6. Unity Through Diversity
Africa's diversity is one of its greatest strengths. Different cultures, languages and experiences should enrich our community, not divide it. Unity does not require uniformity—it requires cooperation.
7. Africa and the Diaspora Are One Family
The continent and the diaspora each bring unique strengths. UPAN exists to help reconnect those strengths so that knowledge, experience, investment and opportunity can flow in both directions.
8. Focus on Solutions
We do not ignore difficult issues, but we refuse to remain stuck in them. We identify challenges honestly and then ask, "What can we build together to improve this?"
9. Knowledge Is Meant to Be Shared
Knowledge grows when it is shared. Every member has something to teach and something to learn. By openly sharing what we know, we strengthen the entire community.
10. Build Something Bigger Than Yourself
UPAN is built on the belief that meaningful change happens when individuals contribute to something larger than themselves. Every question answered, opportunity shared, collaboration formed and project completed helps build the connective infrastructure of a stronger global African family.
Living the Charter
The Community Guidelines explain how we behave.
The Community Charter explains why we behave that way.
Together they create the culture of UPAN.
Every bundle completed.
Every question answered.
Every opportunity shared.
Every collaboration formed.
Every development project delivered.
These are not isolated actions—they are small steps towards building a more connected, capable and collaborative global African community.
Welcome to UPAN. Welcome to the work.
